A solar well pump runs on sunlight instead of a power line. Panels feed a controller, the controller runs a pump down in the well, and the well fills a tank. A float switch at the tank shuts the pump off when the tank is full. We design and install solar well pump systems for ranches, stock wells and off-grid homes around Globe.
Most of these systems store water instead of power. The tank is the battery, and it gets designed along with the pump. Water storage tank work is part of most solar jobs out here. A worn out windmill often becomes a solar well, and a sound mill is still worth windmill repair.

Four parts do the work. A panel array makes DC power, and a controller takes it in. The controller is the brain of the system, and the pump and the float switch wire into it too. When the tank is low and the sun is up, the pump runs.
Batteries are skipped on most ranch systems. Water is the storage instead. Extension design guides for livestock water call for a tank holding about three days of demand. That carries the herd through a cloudy stretch, and a tank set uphill can gravity feed the troughs.
Sizing comes down to two numbers: gallons per day, and total dynamic head. Total dynamic head is the pumping water level, plus the lift to the tank, plus friction in the pipe. Those two numbers pick the pump, and the pump sets the panel wattage.
Most ranch and stock wells out here sit a long way from the nearest power pole. University extension work on livestock water puts the break point near a third of a mile. Past that, running a line to one pump can cost more than the pump is worth. Sunlight is already on site and needs no trench.
Solar only pays off where the sun is strong, and this country has it. The desert Southwest sits at the high end of the nation for peak sun hours. The number that drives a design is not the June peak. It is the short days in December, so we size the array for winter.
The wells out here are not all shallow. We have set solar pumps more than 700 feet down. A deep setting changes the panel count and the wire size, not the basic system. Ranch water travels a long way after it leaves the well, so the pipeline gets designed with the pump.
Most calls on an existing system come down to a few parts. The controller gets the first look, since the panels, the pump and the float all wire through it. After that comes the wiring out at the array, then the float switch, then the pump. Shaded or dusty panels also give back less power than they should.
Livestock are hard on hardware. Cattle rub on panel racks and any pipe they can reach, so the array gets fenced off. Float valves stick when algae builds up in a warm open tank. A stuck float runs the tank over or leaves it dry.
If the trouble is down in the well, we pull the pump with our own hoist. That is the same rig we use for well pump repair on an electric well. Some ranch customers also have us come through on a schedule. We look over the array, the controller, the float and the tank while the water is still running.

(928) 961-6641From the first call to water back at the tap or the tank, here is how it goes.
Call or text (928) 961-6641, or send the form. No water, low pressure, short cycling or a tripped breaker all point somewhere.
Depth, age, the pump that is in it, and the ADWR registration number if you have one. Those numbers start with 55, and old paperwork tells us what is down the hole.
The pressure switch, control box, wiring and motor readings get tested at the wellhead before anything is pulled.
You hear what the repair involves and what it will cost before the work starts. Nothing comes out of the well until you say go.
The pump is pulled and repaired or replaced, and the pipe and wire go back right. Then the system is run and checked, and the wellhead is sealed back up.

We replace worn out well pumps with new submersible pumps sized to the well's depth and yield. New drop pipe, wire, a check valve and a well seal go down with the pump.

The rig pulls and sets pumps and pipe on shallow wells and deep ones. The fishing tools bring up pumps, pipe and rod that have broken off down the hole.
One company handles the house pump, the stock well, the storage tank, the solar setup and the windmill. The whole water system gets looked at together.
