Windmill repair is a big part of what we do out here. A water pumping windmill is a simple machine, and it runs for years with almost nothing from you. Then the wheel turns and the stock tank stays dry. That usually means something below ground: worn leathers, a broken sucker rod, or a stuck check valve.
We work on windmills across Gila County and the ranch country around it. We pull sucker rod and drop pipe with our own pump hoist rig. Tower work is done in a harness, and the cylinder gets rebuilt on the ground. When a mill is past repair, a solar well pump set in the same well is sometimes the better answer.

The wheel catches the wind and turns a set of gears at the top of the tower. Those gears change the spinning into an up and down stroke. The stroke drives a long sucker rod down the inside of the drop pipe. At the bottom of the pipe sits the cylinder, and that is where water gets lifted.
Inside the cylinder is a plunger with leather seals, called leathers. Every upstroke pulls water in past a check valve at the bottom. On the downstroke that valve closes, so the water cannot go back down the hole. The next upstroke pushes it further up the pipe.
The gears run in an oil bath inside a closed case. That self oiling gear case goes back to a 1915 Aermotor windmill patent. It is why these mills ask so little of a rancher. The published schedule is one oil change a year, using a non detergent SAE 10 or lighter oil.
A wheel that turns over a dry tank is a common windmill service problem. The wheel spinning tells you the gears and the rod are still moving. The trouble is usually down the hole. Worn leathers let water slip past the plunger instead of lifting it.
Sand and grit in the water wear leathers faster. A check valve can stick open or plug with scale. A sucker rod can part at a coupling, and then the stroke moves nothing at all. A storm can bend a tail or knock a mill out of the wind.
We pull the rod and pipe with our rig and find out which it is. If the well has filled in with sediment, that is a different job. Our well cleaning and rehabilitation page covers that side of it. The scope of work gets explained before any repair starts.
A windmill only pumps while the wind blows. Government guides on livestock watering tell ranchers to plan on a few hours of pumping a day. One of them says to store three or four days of water for calm stretches. That is why a mill feeds a storage or stock tank.
That makes the tank side of the job matter as much as the mill. We plumb mills to tanks and troughs and set the float valves. Our water storage tank work page covers the tanks and the pipelines that feed them. A dry trough with cattle standing around it is often a tank or pipeline problem.
A well can be too deep for the wheel to lift from. A mill can need more parts than it is worth. We convert those wells to solar or to an electric submersible pump when that fits better. We also put up new windmills for ranchers who want to stay with the mill.

Call or text (928) 961-6641, or send the form. No water, low pressure, short cycling or a tripped breaker all point somewhere.
Depth, age, the pump that is in it, and the ADWR registration number if you have one. Those numbers start with 55, and old paperwork tells us what is down the hole.
The pressure switch, control box, wiring and motor readings get tested at the wellhead before anything is pulled.
You hear what the repair involves and what it will cost before the work starts. Nothing comes out of the well until you say go.
The pump is pulled and repaired or replaced, and the pipe and wire go back right. Then the system is run and checked, and the wellhead is sealed back up.

We clean out existing wells that have filled in with sand, rust and scale. The pump comes out, the hole gets bailed and the casing brushed, then we test pump the well.
Learn MorePressure switch, control box, wiring and motor readings come before a pump is pulled. A bad switch is a much smaller repair than a pump.
The rig pulls and sets pumps and pipe on shallow wells and deep ones. The fishing tools bring up pumps, pipe and rod that have broken off down the hole.
One company handles the house pump, the stock well, the storage tank, the solar setup and the windmill. The whole water system gets looked at together.
We cover Gila County and the country around it, on ranch roads as well as in town. A home or a herd with no water moves to the front of the schedule.
